Upstart, init and Linux competition

Competition is good. Peoples generally complain about the many distributions in Linux, forcing them to make a choice and so eventually a wrong choice.
Surely some efforts are spread widely instead of pushing together efficiently in one direction, I can\’t judge whether GNU/Linux community should gather around a fewer set of product/community or not.

Anyway, a great example is the coming of Upstart as a remplacement for the Init process. Upstart in Universe (Digg it) is a great article explaining what it is, the history, the other solution and practical considerations.
